Lock Re-keying

Cost-effective, convenient and secure — change the key without replacing the lock.

Lock re-keying is the process of altering the internal mechanism of an existing lock so that a new key works while the old key does not. The exterior hardware stays the same, but the internal pins (tumblers) are swapped over or rearranged to match a new fresh key. This way, you don’t have to replace the entire lock.

Re-keying can be cost-effective, convenient and secure. We can assess your locks and advise you whether it’s a recommendable option.

How lock re-keying works

When we re-key a lock, the external hardware stays in place. The lock itself remains installed. The only thing that changes is the key that operates it.

Your locksmith will remove the lock cylinder and adjust or replace the pins inside. These pins are what allow a key to turn the locking system. Once this occurs, your lock will operate only with a new key — all your old keys will no longer work.

When should you re-key your locks?

Lock re-keying is useful in the following situations:

  • You’ve lost your keys — and any stranger could have found them.
  • You’ve recently moved home — and anyone else could have a key to your lock, such as previous owners, cleaners, tenants, houseguests or tradies.
  • You’ve just evicted or changed tenants — and they may still have keys to your property.

Re-keying vs replacement

Sometimes we may recommend replacing a lock rather than re-keying. Lock replacement involves removing the entire lock mechanism from the door and replacing it with brand-new hardware, such as a lockset or deadbolt. The old lock is then discarded.

During replacement, our locksmith removes the entire unit from the door, including the cylinder, internal components and sometimes the strike plate. They then install new hardware, which is usually more modern, thereby improving security. A fresh set of keys is also provided.

Replacing a lock is usually a more expensive and time-consuming option, as you are paying for all brand-new parts and more labour. However, it is sometimes necessary and can offer greater security.

Reasons for replacing a lock:

  • The old lock is worn out, damaged or broken
  • You want to upgrade to premium or smart lock technology
  • You need improved security features
  • Your locking system is outdated
  • You’d like to change the colour of your lock
  • You want to match different keys of different locks into one key, but your locks have different brands or keyholes

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get all of my locks re-keyed to one key?

In many cases, yes. If your locks are compatible, we can often re-key them so a single key operates multiple doors throughout your home. This is known as having your locks "keyed alike". It can be a convenient way to reduce the number of keys you need to carry while maintaining the security of your property.

How much does a re-key cost?

The cost of re-keying depends on factors such as the number of locks and barrels involved, the type of locks and whether any repairs or replacement parts are required. Because every property is different, the best way to get an accurate price is to contact our team for advice and a tailored quote.

Can you re-key a lock without any keys?

Yes, in many cases we can. If you have lost all copies of your key, our locksmiths can assess the lock and determine whether it can be re-keyed or if replacement is the more practical option. We will recommend the most cost-effective solution based on the condition and type of lock you have.

Does it make my home less secure if all my locks are keyed alike to the one key?

No. Having your locks keyed alike does not reduce the security of properly installed, quality locks. The main benefit is convenience: a single key can open multiple doors throughout your home. Our locksmiths can advise whether keying your locks alike is suitable for your property and security requirements.
